English Nationals 2024
August 8-12
Princetown, Dartmoor
The Challenge
After 12 years, the English National Sheepdog Trial returned to the southwest, bringing with it a true taste of Dartmoor’s changeable nature.
From rain to sunshine and everything in between, weather (rather appropriately) was the dominant competitor. Despite conditions, the trial showcased the tenacity and dedication of 150 dog and handler teams to the sport.
The National Championship
Fog rolled in frequently, controlling the field from holding pen to post. It showed with impressive staying power for summer, causing long delays and pushing team selection into Monday.
Despite the challenge, competitors on the field maintained remarkable patience and sportsmanship. Spectators remained cheerful – and the photographers? Determinedly rubbing shoulders, with shifting light and umbrellas stacked together, shutters clicking.
The field itself was a class Dartmoor landscape, a mix of grasses and scattered thistle. At times the terrain blocked key shots, while framing action for others.
Any prime opportunity to capture teams arose at the shed and pen. Here, competing teams were divided by strategy – some trying to slow it down, and committed to a first (and sometimes only) opportunity.
